Moorneen, Cleggan, Cleggan, Co. Galway, H71YN76
Sale Type: For Sale by Private Treaty We are delighted to bring to the market Number 6 Coast Guard Station. This is an end terraced two storey historic house, built circa 1865, and has been recently renovated to create a beautiful, turn key property a stone’s throw from the popular vishing village of Cleggan in Connemara, Co. Galway.
There are numerous stunning beaches in the locality with the beautiful beach of Sallerna only also a short walk way. The ferry to the popular and charming island of Inish Bofin sets sail from Cleggan village daily.
Built around 1865. This listed, protected structure is a former Coast Guard officer’s house. It is positioned at the southern end of the terrace of three houses. They are set at right angles to a further row of five white cottages forming the remainder of the Coast Guard station. There are common areas around the properties for access and parking in addition to private gardens for each property.
The current owner occupier has completed a total renovation and renewal of all plumbing, wiring and appliances. It has a new concrete sub floor, new joists, wood floors and tiling. All the work, along with documentary photography has been carried out in the last two years. The house has been restored with conservation and originality in mind. The entrance door and downstairs west facing window have been returned to their original positions.
The triple aspect affords spectacular views to the ocean and islands to the west, the mountains to the east, and across the fields to the south. The living accommodation has been arranged with the open plan kitchen, dining and sitting areas upstairs to take advantage of the views, while the two bedrooms and bathroom are on the ground floor.
In addition, house No.6 comes with a stone built workshop/studio with a twelve foot square interior, and could be adaptable for many uses. Years ago, this was the wash house for all eight Coast Guard houses. It is partially renovated with new concrete floor, restored “eight over eight” Georgian style windows facing east and south, and solid timber entrance door. It has its own chimney and the fireplace has been restored, ready for a stove if desired. Connected to this building is a boiler house containing the Firebird oil boiler through an archway, and yet another lockable shed, all stone-built with slate roofing. Materials for finishing the pointing and plasterwork are available (for the workshop).
Details of the materials used in the restoration of the main house including exterior lime render, insulating interior plaster, breathable paints and exterior wall paints are available on request.
The main windows throughout the house are triple glazed, Victorian style, sash windows, with tilt facility for easy cleaning, newly made and fitted by Munster Joinery. Two other small windows are double glazed. All doors are new, solid, guaranteed fire doors. A new smart meter has been installed above the main exit.
